Converts and Moshiach
5 Sivan, 5766
On Shavuos, we read the Book of Ruth. Ruth was a non-Jew from Moab (today, a part of Jordan), who became a convert in her love of her mother-in-law Naomi's religion. Naomi lost her husband, her two sons, and her fortune in Moab. She returned to Israel penniless, yet Ruth clung to her and to her religion. Boaz, the greatest sage of the generation and a direct descendant of Judah, recognized Ruth's oustanding character and was very impressed with her loyalty to her mother-in-law and her modesty. As the next-of-kin of Ruth's deceased husband, Boaz married Ruth. He had no problem recognizing her conversion.
Three generations later, two wicked Torah scholars, Doeg and Achitopel, misinterpreted a Torah law and declared King David - Ruth's great grandson and Hashem's anointed (Moshiach means anointed in Hebrew) - a non-Jew unfit for the throne! Of course, they were wrong. But, since Moshiach must come from the House of David, if they had their way, Moshiach would never come!
Failing to recognize a proper conversion could therefore have far-reaching ramifications on all of Israel, even on the entire world.
Rebbe Nathan of Breslev writes (Likutei Halachos, Yora Dea, Kibbud Av Ve'em, 3) that since Esau was born out of the holy union of Isaac and Rebecca, he was able to pass some holy spiritual genes to his offspring. Furthermore, today's converts are the offspring of Esau that received those holy sparks of Isaac and Rebecca. Rebbe Nathan says that as soon as those sparks all complete their conversions and leave Esau for the sons of Jacob (the Jewish people), Esau (Edom) will lose its spiritual power, will be toppled, and Moshiach will be revealed instantly.
In light of Rebbe Nathan's eye-opening principle, anyone who obstructs the path of a worthy convert is literally delaying the Geula - the complete redemption of our people - and the coming of Moshiach.
Although we don't recruit converts, according to Rebbe Nachman of Breslev we must open our hearts to them, for every true and sincere convert that embraces the laws of Torah enhances the sanctification of Hashem's name (see Likutei Moharan I:14).
Have a wonderful Shavuos holiday and Shabbat Nasso. With Hashem's loving grace, the Beams will be back this coming Sunday. See you then, G-d willing.
